His team only averaged 45.3 points per game while winning the 12th Region Tournament but Danville Christian Academy coach Shaun Busick is not worried about his team’s offense going into the state tournament.
DCA (29-3) is built on defense, not offense. The Warriors won the All “A” Classic championship and averaged only 48.5 points per game in the four wins. They have scored 70 or more points in only four games but also have allowed only two teams to score 60 or more points and in the last and have held 11 of the last 13 opponents below 50 points.
“We obviously hung our hats on defense as most teams in the 12th Region did,” Busick said. “It was a very defensive (12th Region) tournament. Very physical and very taxing.
“We feel our defense directly leads to offense and creates offense for us. We are hanging our hats on defense.”
DCA will play Eighth Region champion South Oldham Wednesday at 6 p.m. in the state tournament at Rupp Arena.
Geu Leek Ateny, a 6-10 junior, is DCA’s leading scorer at 16.5 points per game. He’s a 52.6 percent shooter from the field and 81 percent shooter at the foul line. He also leads the team in rebounding with nine per game.
“He is a 6-10, 205-pounder and a great prospect,” the DCA coach said. “He has great length. He can score inside or outside. He is our best free throw shooter which is unusual for a young man that size. He is also excellent on defense.”
Senior guard Titus Boyd went over the 2,000-point career mark in the regional tournament. He averages 14.5 points per game and leads the team with 27 3-pointers.
“He’s just the heart and soul of our team. He’s one of our captains and does such a nice job leading by example,” Busick said. “He’s a great communicator.”
Lual Aye, a 6-10 senior, adds 8.8 points and 6.9 rebounds per game.
“He can also score inside and out. He is a great rim protector and has great quickness and great length,” Busick said.
This will be DCA’s first state tournament appearance.
