The Hopkinsville Tigers broke a 6-6 tie with a pair of runs in the top of the seventh and then held on in the bottom half of the inning to take an 8-7 win over Choctaw High School Tuesday down on the Gulf Coast.

After the Tigers had loaded the bases in the top of the seventh on a hit batter and a pair of walks with two outs, Gavin Powell came up with a two-run single to center, putting the Tigers up 8-6.

Powell then took to the mound in the bottom half of inning to try and close out the win. After a walk and single, Choctaw cut the lead to one on a sac fly. Powell then retired the next two batters on a strikeout and a fielder’s choice to secure the win for the Tigers.

The game was probably closer than it should have been due to Tiger miscues in the field. Hopkinsville was charged with 5 errors in the game, allowing Choctaw to score five unearned runs.

Powell had a big game at the plate, going 2-4 with a double and 2 RBIs. Dylan Sweeney, Chase Fort, Gavin Mitchell, and Andrew Mayes had one hit each for the Tigers. Sweeney and Fort also had two RBIs.

Andrew Mayes got the start for Hopkinsville. He went six innings, giving up six runs, only one of them earned, on 5 hits. He struck out seven and walked only one.
