A night after knocking off visiting Northeast, TN 14-4 in five innings, the Hopkinsville Tigers saw the tables turned on Friday in a 10-4 loss to the Eagles in Clarksville.
In what had been a pitchers’ battle through the first five innings, Northeast erupted for nine runs in the sixth to hand the Tigers their third loss in four outings. The Eagles improved to 9-14 with their fifth win in their last six games.
With the game tied at 1-1 in the top of the fourth, John Payne drove in a run with a single to push the Tigers in front. The narrow advantage held until Northeast’s big sixth inning, with two Hoptown errors, a hit-by-pitch, and four walks opening the door for the Eagles.
Gavin Powell took the loss for the Tigers, allowing nine runs, only one earned, on four hits with four walks and a pair of strikeouts. Gavin Mitchell lasted four and a third innings, giving up a single earned run on four hits with three walks and six strikeouts.
Payne was the lone Tiger with two hits, and Andrew Mayes and Layton Lindsey each drove in a run.
Hopkinsville will look to regroup ahead of a district rematch with University Heights Academy on Monday. The Blazers prevailed 4-1 in the teams’ first meeting this season.
Cayden Young earned the win for Northeast, surrendering two runs, one earned, on seven hits with three strikeouts and five walks over six frames. Cam Skaggs, Jackson Meece, and Jamarion Green all had two hits and an RBI for the Eagles.
