After eight years at Heritage Christian Academy, Matt McGowan is looking for a restart to his coaching and administrative career.

McGowan informed the school on Friday that he was resigning as head boys basketball coach and athletic director of the Hopkinsville private school.

He told YourSportsEdge.com Friday afternoon that he was taking a similar role at Cornerstone Christian in Shelbyville, coaching the boys basketball team and serving as the athletic director of the school.

McGowan was hired to coach the girls’ basketball team at Heritage Christian in 2017 and guided the Lady Warriors to the championship game of the Kentucky Christian Athletic Association.

Midway through the same season, he took over as the boys’ coach. McGowan would coach the HCA girls for two more seasons before focusing solely on the boys’ program.

HCA was KCAA boys’ state runner-up in 2018 and 2022. They won the KCAA boys state championship in 2023, ten years after their last one.

McGowan was 118-117 in eight seasons as HCA head coach.

As athletic director, he also oversaw the school’s move to the Kentucky High School Athletic Association and 8th District in all sports in 2021.

Like HCA, Cornerstone Christian recently was granted membership to the KHSAA. Cornerstone was a KHSAA member from 2000-10 and was a member of the KCAA until rejoining the KHSAA in 2023.

Cornerstone had a high school enrollment of 51 in 2024, almost one-third of HCA’s enrollment of 135.

In addition to coaching basketball and serving as AD, McGowan said he would like to restart the soccer program at Cornerstone, which last played in the KCAA in 2022. They won a KCAA state soccer title in 2006.
