Coming off the disappointment off Monday night’s tough 12-inning loss to Lyon County in the 2nd Region All A Classic championship game, you could have understood if the University Heights Academy Blazers might have started a bit slow Friday night in their key district matchup against Christian County. And turns out, it was a costly first inning indeed for the Blazers.
Christian County jumped on the Blazers for five runs in the bottom of the first inning and used a good night on the mound from Aiden Lewis to take an 8-3 win at Colonel Field.
The win put an end to a three-game losing skid for the Colonels.
After a walk and a hit batter to open the bottom of the first, Blake Boehman made it 1-0 with an RBI single. Eddie Davis came up with a two-out single that drove in a pair of runs, extending the lead to 3-0. After another hit batter, Layton Creamer and Johnny Lewis had RBI singles, and just like that the Colonels were up 5-0 before the first hot dogs of the night had been wolfed down.
Aiden Lewis kept UHA in check until the top of the 5th. Hayden Hunt doubled in a run to trim the lead to 5-1. Aiden Jones then singled to score Hunt and the lead was down to 5-2.
The Blazers got even closer in the top of the 6th when Courtland Gibson scored on a wild pitch to draw UHA to within 5-3.
But that would be as close as the Blazers could get as Christian County put the game away with 3 more runs in the bottom of the inning.
For Christian County, Blake Boehman was 2-2 with an RBI and two runs scored. Eddie Davis finished 2-3 with 4 RBIs and a run scored. Layton Creamer was 2-3 with an RBI.
UHA was led by Hayden Hunt, who went 3-4 with a run scored. Jackson Flynn was 2-3 in the game. The Blazers ended up with 10 hits to 8 for Christian County.
Aiden Lewis got the win for the Colonels, he went as long as he could go, reaching his pitch count limit after 6 ⅔ innings. He gave up three runs on 10 hits, striking out six and walking none.
