Just hours after picking up a big district win over University Heights, the Christian County Colonels were back on the field Saturday for a pair of games against Union County and Daviess County. Defensive miscues played a big part in the Colonels losing to both the Braves and the Panthers.
Two errors in the top of the 8th inning were the difference in the first game of the day for Christian County. The Colonels had two miscues in the top of the 8th inning and that allowed Union County to score the only run of the game in a 1-0 win for the Braves.
The Colonels, who have had fielding issues at times during the season, had gone seven innings without a miscue as Christian County and Union County were locked up in a pitchers duel between Andrew Fincham and Coltin Capps. Fincham and Capps entered the 8th inning having given up a total of four hits between them.
In the 8th, the Braves got a leadoff single that turned into a double thanks to an infield error. With two outs Damon Utley hit a ground ball that could have ended the inning, but the Colonels misplayed the ball, allowing the go-ahead run to score.
The Colonels threatened to force another inning in the bottom of the eighth. Layton Creamer led off the inning with a double to left, giving the Christian County faithful some hope. However, Coltin Capps set down the next three batters as the Braves took the extra-inning win.
Aiden Lewis, Blake Boehman, Eddie Davis, and Layton Creamer had one hit each for the Colonels.
Andrew Fincham did not deserve the loss in the game. He went eight innings, giving up one unearned run on two hits striking out 8 and walking two.
The second game of the day for Christian County saw Daviess County’s Brett Poole put the clamps on the Colonel offense as the Panthers picked up the 6-1 win.
Poole went 5 ⅔ innings on the hill, giving up one unearned run on just three hits.
Daviess County scored twice in the top of the second and twice more in the top of the 5th to take a 4-0 lead.
Christian County got on the board thanks to a Panther error in the bottom of the 6th to cut the lead to 4-1.
The Panthers then added a couple of insurance runs in the top of the seventh on two Colonel errors.
The Colonels loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the seventh but could not get a two-out rally started as Daviess County held on for the five-run win.
Fielding errors cost Christian County dearly in the game. The Colonels were charged with five errors which allowed the Panthers to score five unearned runs.
Sebastian Dazey, Blake Boehman, Eddie Davis, and William McCart had one hit each for Christian County.
Nolan Young got the start for Christian County and went 4 ⅔ innings, giving up four runs, only one earned, on five hits, striking out four and walking one.
