Runs were at a premium for the Christian County Lady Colonels Saturday as they traveled to Mike Miller Park Saturday for the annual Marshall County Slugfest. The Lady Colonels fell to Mercy 6-1 in their opening game of the day and then rebounded to take a 2-1 win over Hancock County in the second game.
Against Mercy, the Jaguars scored in each of their first three at-bats to build a 6-0 lead. That would be more than enough for senior pitcher Olivia Colebank. Colebank allowed just three hits in six innings in the circle and gave up one unearned run as the Jaguars got the win in the six-inning game that ended due to time limit. Colebank struck out 12 and walked none.
Christian County got on the board in the top of the sixth when Jazzy Tejada singled to drive in Avery Adock for the Lady Colonels’ only run of the game. Avery Adcock and Alexis Epps had one hit each as the Lady Colonels were held to just three hits for the game.
Good news in the game for the Lady Colonels was that Jordan Turner, who is recovering from off-season arm surgery, went 2 ⅓ shutout innings in relief.
In the second game against Hancock County, Alexis Epps drew a bases-loaded walk with two outs in the bottom of the 8th as the Lady Colonels literally ‘walked’ off a 2-1 win over the Lady Hornets.
JaKayla Grubbs was placed on 2nd place to start the bottom of the 8th inning. After Alondra Rodriguez was intentionally walked, Jazzy Tejada sacrificed the two runners to second and third. Alyssa Petterson was then intentionally walked, setting up the stage for the game-ender.
The winning run came after the Lady Colonels had to rally from a 1-0 deficit in the bottom of the seventh. Alyssa Petterson doubled to lead off the bottom of the 7th and then scored on a one-out single from Alison Grant as Christian County pulled even at 1-1 and sent the game into extra innings.
Alondra “B.B” Rodriguez was 2-2 to lead the Lady Colonels. Alexis Epps finished 1-2 with an RBI.
After pitching in relief in the opening game, Jordan Turner got the start against Hancock County and was looking like her old self. Turner went five innings, giving up one run on seven hits, striking out four and walking two.
Alyssa Petterson got the win in relief, going the final three innings, giving up no runs on two hits, striking out one, and walking one.
