Caldwell Tops Union to Remain Unbeaten at Home (w/PHOTOS)

Caldwell County remains unbeaten at the VFW Ballpark this season and broke a tie in the all-time series with Union County.

Ari Wells drove a two-run home run over the scoreboard in right field in the bottom of the sixth inning as the Tigers defeated the Braves 9-6 Thursday night in Princeton.

Wells finished the day 4-for-4 at the plate with the two runs batted in as Caldwell improved to 15-2 this season — and 11-0 at home.

The Tigers built a 5-2 lead through three innings before Union (6-13) battled back to tie things 5-5 in the sixth.

But Caldwell responded with four runs in the bottom of the sixth to win its seventh-straight game.

Westin King went 3-for-4 at the plate and drove home two runs. David Ginn was 2-for-2 with a double and an RBI.

Derek Wilson doubled while Luke Parker and Mitchell Phelps each singled.

Presten Alfred was the winning pitcher for Caldwell after taking over for starter Ethan Ramage in the fourth inning. Alfred allowed one earned run on two hits in 2.2 innings.

Wells pitched the seventh inning, giving up an unearned run on one hit while striking out two.

Noah Burgess and Caleb Carr were each 2-for-3 for Union.

Caldwell took a 1-0 lead in the first, but Union scored twice in the top of the second to go up 2-1.

The Tigers went back up 3-2 in the home half of the second, then put up two more runs in the third to make it 5-2.

Union scored single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to tie things at 5-5 before Caldwell took the lead for good in the bottom of the sixth.

With two wins over Union this season, Caldwell has taken a 29-28 advantage in the all-time series.

The Tigers are scheduled to play at home again on Friday against Webster County.
