Caldwell County broke up a perfect game, a no-hitter and a shutout in the seventh inning, but Marshall County held on for an 8-3 victory in baseball action Saturday in Draffenville.

Marshall junior left-hander Thomas Bagby took a perfect game to the seventh inning before giving up an infield single to Luke Parker. Drew Stevens followed with a liner into center for the second hit.

That ended the day for Bagby, who struck out 12, but the visiting Tigers tried to mount a late rally in the Preston Cope Wood Bat Classic.

Ari Wells doubled home two runs to get Caldwell on the scoreboard. Wells later scored on a groundout to short by Channing Puckett to make it an 8-3 game.

A pair of walks loaded the bases with two outs. But the Tigers fell one baserunner short of getting the potential tying run to the plate. A foul pop-up to the catcher ended the game.

Marshall (13-6) had taken a 1-0 lead in the first, then put up three-run frames in both the second and third to go up 7-0.

Another run in the fifth gave the Marshals an 8-0 advantage.

Meanwhile, Bagby retired the first 18 batters he faced in the contest.

Kash Chiles was 3-for-4 at the plate and knocked in two for the Marshals. Kannon Dunn went 2-for-2 with a double and three runs batted in. Ayden Clevidence finished 2-for-3 with a double and scored twice.

Caldwell defeated the Marshals 8-1 earlier this season in Princeton, but Marshall leads the all-time series 33-18.

Caldwell (15-4) has now suffered back-to-back losses for the first time all season, including the Tigers’ loss at Lyon County on Thursday.

Caldwell next visits Christian County on Monday.
