Lyons Top Trigg 9-6 but Fall to Apollo 6-4

Lyon County remained unbeaten against 5th District competition this season by turning back Trigg County 9-6 Saturday at Jim Boyd Field at Lee S. Jones Park in Eddyville.

Trigg (10-10 overall, 4-2 district) made things interesting late after trailing 5-0.

The Wildcats got as close as 5-3 in the top of the sixth inning. But the Lyons countered with four runs in the bottom of the frame to make it 9-3.

Trigg kept its hopes alive in the top of the seventh inning by scoring three times and eventually getting the potential go-ahead run to the plate.

However, with the bases loaded, Lyon’s Hudson Phillips got the next batter to ground out to short to end the contest.

Peyton Williams had a big game at the plate for the Lyons, going 4-for-4 with a double while driving in five runs. Korben Lucas and Austin Spears each doubled for Lyon.

Trigg outhit Lyon 7-6 but left 13 men on base in the contest.

Aidon Butts was 3-for-5 for the Wildcats with a pair of doubles and four runs batted in. Slaton Carter was 2-for-3 with a home run, a double and an RBI. Cannon Scott and James Garnett each singled.

Williams, the Lyon starter, picked up the win on the mound. He went 4.2 innings, allowing just one base hit while striking out seven and walking five.

Lyon, which is 6-0 against district foes, scored twice in the first inning, once in the third and twice in the fourth to build its 5-0 lead.

The Lyons then hosted Apollo and led 4-2 through five innings.

However, the Eagles (14-10) scored twice in each of the sixth and seventh innings to pull out a 6-4 triumph.

Down 2-0 early, Lyon put together all of its runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Eli Baker doubled home a run while Spears had an RBI single to tie the game. Two runs scored on an error as Lyon went up 4-2.

But Apollo answered with its two runs in the sixth to tie the game, then added two more in the seventh.

Geordyn Stevens singled home the go-ahead run in the last inning for the Eagles.

Isaac James was the winning pitcher for Apollo. He blanked Lyon over the final 1.1 innings with no hits and two strikeouts.

Lucas was 2-for-2 at the plate for Lyon while Baker finished 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Spears, Phillips and Brady Belt each singled.

Grayson Smith led Apollo, going 3-for-5 with a pair of runs batted in.

The Lyons, now 15-7, will play at home again on Monday when they host Murray.
