Stephen Whitecotton made history on Tuesday as the first tennis player from Heritage Christian Academy to play at the state tournament. He just wished the moment lasted longer.
Playing against one of the top 16 players in the state, the HCA 8th grader dropped a 6-0, 6-0 decision to Corbin’s Nathaniel Hill at the Lexington Tennis Club.
The first day of the state tournament was moved indoors due to rain in the central Kentucky region.
Whitecotton struggled with his first serve, which kept him on the defensive for most of the match. However, he was one of only five middle schoolers statewide to advance to the round of 64 at the state tournament.
Whitecotton finished in fourth place at the region tournament at Henderson County.
