It was a bit bumpy at first, but both Madisonville-North Hopkins girls’ doubles teams moved on to the second round of the KHSAA State Tennis Tournament.

The event was moved indoors to locations in Lexington and Nicholasville due to rain on Tuesday in central Kentucky.

Region champions Kiley Demoss and Caroline Lovvorn fell behind 4-1 in their match against St. Henry’s Maggie Kute and Lyndsey Payne, but rebounded to claim the 6-4, 6-1 win. It’s the second straight year the Lady Maroon pair has advanced past the first round.

They will play Henry Clay’s Kaitlin Gish and Charlotte Young in Wednesday’s second round at the University of Kentucky.

The Madisonville team of Albany Ray and Emma Tagg claimed their first state tourney win, advancing past Lawrence County’s Elizabeth Browning and Reagan Webb 6-4, 6-1. They will play Cassidy Parker and Alexis Poore of McCracken County, seeded among the top eight teams in the state, in Wednesday’s second round at the University of Kentucky.

Tuesday marked the first time in at least 27 years that Madisonville had two doubles teams win first-round matches at the state tournament.
