It was a historic day for the Dawson Springs track and field team at Thursday’s Class 1A State Track and Field Meet at the University of Kentucky.
Not only did two school records fall, but they opened the meet with the school’s first-ever state title.
The 3200-meter relay team of Sean Stallins, Montgomery Johnston, Deacon Dever, and Easton Bourland took the lead on the third leg and ran away with the state title with a school record time of 8:09.63. Their time bested the old record by nearly 10 seconds. The four fastest times in program history were all run this season.
It was one of three visits to the medal podium for Bourland.
He finished third in the 800 meters in 1:58.21, just missing his school record by less than a second. The sophomore owns the nine fastest times in school history in the 800.
He was also seventh in the 1600 meters in 4:39.55
Sean Stallins came in 11th place in the 800 meters with a time of 2:04.29.
Deacon Dever was 12th in the 3200-meter run in 10:29.85. His time clipped Bourland’s school record in the event by .09 seconds, which was run earlier this season at the Invitational of the South.
The 1600-meter relay team of Stallins, Johnston, Dever, and Bourland capped a busy day with a 12th-place finish in 3:41.02.
Despite the limited entries, Dawson Springs finished in 14th place with 18 points.
