A pretty good start to the NCAA baseball tournament for a former Madisonville-North Hopkins standout as the Murray State Racers knocked off Ole Miss 9-6 in Oxford Friday night. The Racers broke a 6-6 tie with a run in the top of the 8th and two more in the top of the 9th to pick up their first win in the NCAA tournament since 1979.
Former Maroon Jonathan Hogart had a standout night for Murray. Hogart ended the night 3-6 with three runs scored and one RBI. Hogart got the game started with a bang for the Racers, sending the first pitch of the night out of the park to give Murray State a quick 1-0 lead.
Hogart’s homer was the first for Murray State in the NCAA Tournament since Greg Tooley homered in the 1979 Starkville Regional against Mississippi State.
Up next for the Racers is a Saturday afternoon game against Georgia Tech. The Yellow Jackets opened play Friday with a 9-2 win over Western Kentucky.
The game will mark the first-ever meeting between the two schools.
