While Trigg County no longer competes in Class 1A in track and field, the school continues to hold four state meet records, which again survived this year’s athletes.

Trigg’s longest-held state record is Sam Love’s 1:54.47 run in 1981. He edged Mercer County’s Lance Darland by a second in that race.

Louisville Collegiate’s Roman Sierpina won this year’s 1A state title in 1:55.53.

Love was also part of another state meet record the following year that still stands. He combined with Scott Mayes, Ricky Diggs, and Steve Neel to run a 3:21.40 in the 1600-meter relay in 1982. The group, aided by Diggs’ 400 split of 48.6 seconds, beat Harrodsburg by nearly five seconds.

Both the 1981 and 1982 Trigg squads brought home state championships.

Louisville Collegiate (3:26.86) won this year’s Class 1A state title in 1600 relay, edging University Heights Academy (3:27.25), Fort Campbell (3:31.62), and Caldwell County (3:31.98).

Al Baker continues to hold the 1A state meet record in the 100-meter dash. He ran a 10.7-second race in 1985, defeating Lexington Catholic’s Mark Mitchell by .08 seconds.

Even more impressive was Baker’s state win in the 200-meter dash in what was then a school-record time of 22.39 seconds. That same day, Baker finished second in the shot put with what is still a school-record toss of 51-feet, 2 inches.

Newport Central Catholic’s Charlie Ford won this year’s 1A title in 100 meters in 10.95 seconds.

Two athletes have come close to besting Baker’s time at the state meet. Malik Blount of Fort Knox ran a 10.74 in 2022, and Beechwood’s Luke Erdman ran 10.77 in 2024.

Trigg County’s girls’ program still holds one state meet record.

Romalisa Hendrix, Melinda McGee, Margaret Hendrix, and Michelle Henderson ran a 1:43.30 in the 800-meter dash in 1982, defeating rival Fort Campbell by a second.

Lexington Christian won this year’s 800-meter relay in 1:46.06.

Trigg County has seen two state meet records go by the wayside in the past 15 years.

The 1982 boys’ 800-meter relay team of Calvin Turnley, Steve Neel, Ricky Diggs, and Scott Mayes took first place in 1:30.24. That record stood until 2018 when Fort Knox ran a 1:29.

Trigg’s girls twice set the 400-meter relay record at the 1A state meet. In 2002, Pauline White, Mandee McGee, Keshia Coleman, and Rizpah Torian took the title in a state meet record time of 50.16 seconds, breaking Fort Campbell’s 1983 record of 50.34 seconds.

In 2008, Abigail Torian, Janada Acree, Shelby Grubbs, and Khadijah Grubbs also ran a 50.16 in the qualifying heat to equal the state record.

St. Henry broke the 50-second mark in 2013 with a new record time of 49.75 seconds.

The oldest Class 1A state meet record is held by Glasgow’s Jesse Stuart, who threw the shot put 67 feet in 1969. The longest-held girls’ 1A state meet record is held by Fleming County’s Maxine Graham, who won the 1975 long jump state title.
