When Clayton Guillory became the head football coach at Cornerstone Christian in San Antonio, he saw something in Davis McCray that others had not yet seen.

“He was a basketball player and kind of played football at tight end,” said Guillory. “I moved him outside (to receiver) and he has gone from there.”

McCray had 32 receptions for 639 yards and 10 touchdowns last season but also had 38 tackles at linebacker.

Now he’s also positioned to play Southeastern Conference football after verbally committing to Kentucky on Monday. He also had official visits scheduled to Houston, Washington State, Rice and Columbia.

“He is 6-2 and about 195 now coming off track. Normally he’s about 200 pounds,” the coach said. “He’s a big, strong, physical receiver. He has run a 4.5 (second 40-yard dash) that was laser timed and 4.4 hand timed.

“He is so impressive because he is so big and strong and has so much physicality to his game. He also played linebacker for us because when we play a fast, mobile quarterback we can use him to spy (on the quarterback) and close the gap (if the quarterback runs).

“But he also runs vertical routes really well. He gets off press coverage because of his physicality. We throw bubble screens or quick screens to his side because he is such a great blocker.”

Guillory had a “gut feeling” that McCray would commit to Kentucky on his official visit. The Texas receiver connected well with offensive coordinator Bush Hamdan and receivers coach L’Damian Washington.

“Davis told me he had some great conversations with the coaches and how well they connected,” the high school coach said.

McCray may still take his other official visits but he will not attend any summer camps other than the Louisiana Tech 7-on-7 camp with Defcom 1 Texas 7v7,  a team coached by Guillory.

One of his teammates on Defcom is quarterback Keisean Henderson, a four-star recruit headed to Houston, and another one is athlete Jermaine Bishop, the No. 1-ranked athlete in the 2026 recruiting class according to 247Sports.

“He is good with his commitment, so he won’t be going to any camp except the one with us because we have a really good team,” Guillory said.

  1. A low 3* recruit. Ranked like 1,157 out of the 2026 class. We need to improve on recruiting. In the past before the transfer portal this could be a guy that you prepare for about 2-3 years to get ready to play. This kid will end up transferring after he doesn’t play a snap his freshman year. You have to go after recruits that are either able to help there redshirt freshman season or true freshman season. This isn’t getting it done. I think Stoops doesn’t want to spend any money on his players. Why don’t we ever get a top 50 recruit? Never sometimes a top 100 recruit maybe one every couple years but it should be easier than ever to reel in the big fish when its a money war now. We still can’t recruit even when money is involved. I would go after 10 great high school recruits then spend the rest of the money in the portal. Its like Stoops has no idea how to win in the modern era that’s why we’ve been left behind.
