While it seems like big-time college athletics are now more about the money than anything else at times, there are occasions where money does not rule.
The rumors about how much Kentucky basketball players will be paid next season — over $20 million — do not always go over well with some fans but that is why it is so refreshing to see the news about upcoming Kentucky basketball camps.
It was announced that Kentucky would host satellite camps at North Laurel High School (June 20 from 5-730 p.m.) and Russell County (June 21 from 10:30 a.m.-1 p.m.). The camps are open to boys and girls ages 7-17 and both camps are FREE.
If that doesn’t tell you a lot about coach Mark Pope and his desire to connect with fans of all ages, it should.
Otega Oweh, Kentucky’s leading scorer last season, recently announced he was returning to UK for another season and the all-SEC performer will have a youth camp July 23 at the Lexington Sports Center (3801 Mall Road) from 3-6 p.m.. The camp is open to boys and girls in grades 1-8 .
Oweh will teach the players new drills and also provide motivational tips.
Each participant will receive an individual photo with Oweh and have the opportunity to bring an item to camp to be signed. Each camper will also get a limited edition Otega Oweh Basketball ProCamp t-shirt with additional upgrades available during checkout.
The camp staff will feature some of the area’s top high school and college coaches with a maximum camper to coach ratio of 10 to 1 for the best individual instruction.
Cost is $199 per camper which in today’s camp world is not outrageous and my guess is that those who do attend will be pleased with what Oweh and ProCamps do.

Some of these players are making more than coaches. I wonder how that makes the coaches feel? Does this give more power to the players. Also most of these college players won’t play professional. If someone is smart they could make almost enough during there 4 years of college to do absolutely nothing for the next 10 years. When they see how much jobs pay they wont understand how hard it is to make money.
Terry, next thing they need to do is put a cap how much a player can make per year in college from NIL. This will stop all the flooding of players transferring.
