Shawn Jones has been picked to lead the Hopkinsville High archery team in what is expected to be its final season of competition before the school consolidates with Christian County High.
Jones served as an assistant coach for both the boys’ and girls’ programs at Hopkinsville and says his knowledge of the sport has been beneficial.
“I was introduced to archery at twelve and was encouraged by a former coach to consider coaching the sport,” Jones said in a media release on Wednesday.
He says he was also persuaded to take the job by his daughter, Hayden, a member of the team.
“She wanted me to become a coach, and that made the decision even more meaningful. I’m a very motivated person and passionate about everything I do. No matter the task, I always give 110%,” said Jones, a 2004 graduate of Christian County High School.
“We are very excited to have Coach Jones lead the archery program,” HHS athletic director Jacob Ezell said. “He will be a great addition to the HHS Tiger athletics program. He has done great things with assisting the HHS Archery program, and we’re looking forward to the same success and leadership moving forward as the head coach.”
Hoptown has competed at both the NASP and KHSAA levels over the past decade, and this spring saw Evangeline Freeman become the first Hopkinsville archer to advance to the state tournament since Mary Poe in 2018.
