High school coach Clayton Guillory said receiver Davis McCray could also be an elite defensive player.
Recent Kentucky commit Davis McCray of San Antonio describes himself as a “twitch 6-foot-1 type of guy who is fast and can line up and just go get the ball.”
He’s a former basketball player who knows he can out jump most defensive backs when he’s running a pass route.
“Basketball was always my favorite sport because I liked playing in front of a crowd in an enclosed setting. But then I transitioned to football and it’s more fun to hit people,” said McCray, who quickly admits he liked watching guard Rob Dillingham play at Kentucky for coach John Calipari.
McCray had 32 receptions for 639 yards and 10 touchdowns last season but also had 38 tackles at linebacker. Cornerstone Christian coach Clayton Guillory calls him a “phenomenal athlete who really can go get the ball and run great routes” but noted that he is also special on defense.
However, McCray did have Division I offers to play defense including ones from Houston and Texas Tech.
“I know that some of these schools who were trying to sell him, or are still trying to present to him, the opportunity to play on defense and the transition to the NFL with the size of the safeties and DBs (defensive backs) that the NFL has been drafting lately,” Guillory said. “They are trying to get him to understand how his size (6-1, 195 pounds) would transition to that.
“Right now his heart is aa receiver, but I do know that he enjoys playing defense enough that he would make the transition possibly. Ultimately, Davis is the type of kid that he’s going to do what’s best for his team. So if a coach says, ‘Hey, you know you could work at wide receiver but you can get on the field at defensive back,’ then most likely you’re going to see Davis at defensive back.
“I know the dream might be to hopefully play on Sundays (in the NFL) one day, so if that’s the best transition for him to get to the big dance on Sundays, then that may be something that he’ll do. But he does really enjoy playing receiver.”
Guillory said Davis dedicated himself in the weight room during the off-season and “the kid is chiseled up” in a big way.
“If you’re not a big time defensive back, and I’m not just talking about skill set but I’m talking about size wise, you really think about what you’re going to do when you roll up in front of him,” Davis’ high school coach said. “So that’s a pretty great trait for a receiver to have.”

Hate it that we lost our 4* DL commit and you have to believe that he will be a Cardinal which will give the Dirty Birds 7 of top players in Ky. to 0 for the Cats. Can Stoops and staff reach any lower limits?
We are back to the cellar of the joker days. Were we are beating UCF Kent state and Georgia tech for recruits. When big dog was recruiting kids they would have Michigan Ohio State and Tennessee as the other schools that were after the kid. I guess Eddie Gran knows all the diamonds in the rough or he’s a complete idiot. How can we compete in a mini NFL conference getting players who hardly any power 4 conferences want. If Stoops thinks he can win like this then he needs to be shown the door now!
But at least we are getting some unranked players.
