Being a ‘point center’ is okay with Reece Potter

Reece Potter, a 7-foot-1 junior transfer from Miami (Ohio), is the tallest player on coach Mark Pope’s roster at Kentucky this season, but he emphasized again Monday that he would be fine playing “point center” to help initiate UK’s offense like Amari Williams did last season.

“I feel like I shoot the ball at a high level, and I’m able to pass. Those are the things (Pope) really liked,” Potter said at his media opportunity Monday. “He was able to use Amari Williams and BG (Brandon Garrison) in more of a point center type of way.”

Potter, a former Lexington Catholic star, averaged 6.3 points, 3.4 rebounds, 1.1 assists, and 15.7 minutes per game in 56 games at Miami. He also made 37 3-pointers in his two seasons.

He said Monday he wanted to “continue to grow” his playmaking ability.

“I got some great players in front of me that do a great job of it,” Potter said. “I’m gonna be able to learn from them and keep growing my game in practice every single day.”

Potter did more than just play inside at Catholic, which enhanced his versatility when he got to college. He’s also trained with former UK player Daniel Orton, who played at UK during John Calipari’s first season, along with John Wall, DeMarcus Cousins, Eric Bledsoe, and Patrick Patterson, during his high school years.

“He moved from Oklahoma here after his playing days. Me and him used to go at each other during practice. Every single morning, we used to work out. So I was able to learn from him and grow from him,” Potter said.

The two still have a close relationship with Orton, a former NBA first-round draft pick, and say they talk every day.

  1. Don’t forget the foreign player were supposed to get for up coming season. Again NCAA is dragging there feet about his eligibility no word has been said.

    1. The problem is not the NCAA. It’s the Orange Man not issuing foreign student visas. The kid will more than likely never play at UK.

        1. Yes, I see you are correct. With what I read about extra screening and taking longer to process, it’s gonna be a long wait. Also they are checking social media accounts, so if you have said one word in your lifetime they don’t like, you can forget it.

    2. It is a Visa issue that UK thinks will be solved. hopefully that is political as it needs to get

  2. Trump Dysfunctional Syndrome is so prevalent in some, they are disrespectful to one of the greatest Presidents in US history and therefore blinded from seeing how much has been done FOR the USA in just 5 1/2 months! After a 4 year term with an incompetent inhabitant of the WH, anyone with a smidgen of sense knows the USA is now back on track after o’bama & o’biden opened the borders to allow millions including terrorists, murderers, rapists, mental cases & more misfits to enter the USA.

The man who needs to work to get any foreign players enrolled is the UK AD who has been slack in doing his job for years. Big “Z” had “Zero” help from the UK AD when he was delayed getting admitted to UK! So, it’s no surprise if UK has another foreigner being delayed.

If the player is “clean” with no record or history of issues, he will get through the new government vetting process (which was shelved for the most part during those lib administration,

  3. Little Baron….too bad you made this political. UK sports was once my refuge from the fascist trump. TDS exists for a reason…. your cult leader is the worst thing that has happened to the USA in my lifetime….and I am 75 years old. Try watching something other than FOX or Newsmax. ICE (modern day gestapo) is picking up people from unmarked vehicles with no badges ….. no warrants…. what countries in the world do that? Authoritarian run countries…. There is so much more harm being done than the one thing I mentioned …. are you even awake? I hope you don’t rely on Medicaid or SNAP.

    1. The political insertion into this thread was the disrespectful “orange man” comment. As a genuine citizen who has loved the USA for over 3/4 century, I boldly stand up against such evil speaking of our President who has been sovereignly protected & selected by our Savior God, our dear Lord Jesus, to lead our nation as it returns to “one nation under God” with no endorsement of the LBGXYZ misfits & radical libs who have been running wild with the deep state operating to undermine the real USA.

TDS has weakened the mind to only see orange & to want illegals to go untouched – the robbers, murderers, terrorists, rapists. Only deranged minds defend such people. Every illegal is a criminal – just by crossing the border illegally & most carry a lot of baggage.

  4. This team has a lot of interchangeable parts. Let’s say Jelavic never comes to Kentucky. Quaitance can play the 4. If Quaintance isn’t ready to play in November, move Dioubate to the 4 with Potter backing him up. Williams would play the 3 with Noah backing him up. Garrison and Moreno would hold the 5 spot down.
When ready, Quaintance will start at the 4 and play some backup 5. Dioubate will start at the 3 spot and play some backup 4 along with Potter. Williams and Noah will battle for backup 3 minutes, with Noah possibly getting some minutes as the backup 2.
If Jelavic does come to Kentucky, the 4 spot becomes that much stronger, as does the 3 and 2. We will be a better defensive team, a better rebounding team, and a more efficient scoring team. Nobody will want to play Kentucky!
