Kentucky commit Maddyn Greenway will be playing for Team USA in the FIBA U19 Women’s World Cup July 12-20 in Brno, Czechia.

Greenway was added to the roster Monday after not making the original cut after the team trials where she was one of 25 players invited. However, when a spot came open, USA Basketball reached out to the five-star point guard from Minnesota. She was previously a finalist for the 2023 USA Women’s U16 National Team and attended trials for the 2024 USA U17 National Team.

Greenway arrived in Colorado Springs Monday for five days of training camp before the team leaves for Europe to compete against the world’s top 15 U19 national teams.

Greenway, a five-star recruit, has been ranked as high as No. 8 in her recruiting class and already had scored 4,454 points in 153 games — 29.1 points per game — and won four straight state titles, something no Minnesota high school team had ever done. She also has 1,036 assists along with 999 rebounds and 645 steals. She’s made 355 3-pointers.

Greenway averaged 32.8 points per game last season, her third straight year with more than 1,000 points, and shot 58.6 percent from 2-point range, 37.7 percent from 3 and 52 percent overall. She had 278 assists, 232 rebounds and 155 steals.

“She has obviously accomplished a lot but this probably takes the cake,” Chad Greenway’s, the UK commit’s father and a former NFL player, said. “Seeing the name Greenway on the back of a USA jersey is so special and we are so proud of her. She got to the USA Trials and didn’t make it but she never gave up.

“I get emotional just talking about it. My Dad has passed away, but to  think that somebody in our family will wear a USA jersey is pretty special for all of us.”

However, there was one downside to being added to the team — Greenway will miss the rest of her AAU season to make her Team USA debut.

“This is all kind of bittersweet. She has been grinding recently with state track and her AAU schedule and then going to USA Trials,” Chad Greenway said. “She loves her AAU teammates. She has been friends with some of them since she was little.

“It’s kind of emotional not to finish her AAU career with them. She loves the opportunity with USA Basketball but we are relationship people. It was hard for her to understand because this is such a great opportunity but she had to make sacrifices by saying yes to USA Basketball.”

Chad Greenway and his wife, Jenni, are both going to Brno, Czechia. He will be there for the first half of the competition while his wife will stay the entire time.

“Our other daughter, Beckett (a starter as an eighth-grade guard on the 2025 state championship team), is also being recruited. I need to make sure she gets to her AAU event in Chicago and there are a bunch of (college) coaches wanting to see her,” Chad Greenway said.
