While Zach Hampton may not qualify as a ‘local’ Hoptown Hopper, the Corpus Christi native certainly has a ‘Hoptown connection.’
Noted Christian County historian William Turner alludes to the ‘Hoptown connection’ when discussing important and historic events. For Hampton, his uncle Keith and aunt Holly have been integral to the success of the Hoppers behind the scenes, so it was a no-brainer when he got the chance to play in front of some family this summer.
Hampton hit .404 in his senior season at Veterans Memorial High School in Corpus Christi and was 9-2 on the mound. He was named the school’s offensive player of the year, All-State Elite, and was selected to play in the Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association All-Star Game.
In addition to leading his baseball team to a 29-4 record and a regional semifinal appearance in the spring, Hampton was a member of the school’s 39-1 basketball team, which advanced to the Texas Class 5A semifinals.
Hampton will be playing at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, an NCAA Division III school in Belton, Texas.
He talked about his summer to date after picking up the pitching win for the Hoppers on Wednesday, tossing six innings of scoreless relief in a 9-5 win over the Madisonville Miners.
