The Madisonville-North Hopkins Maroons closed out pool play Friday at the Best of the West taking on event-contender Pearl-Cohn in the third game of the day for both teams. Both entered the game at 2-0.
The Firebirds started off quickly and built a big early lead. However, the Maroons did not go away and battled their way back into the contest.
In the final minutes of the game, the Maroon scored to cut the Pearl-Cohn lead to 30-21. The Madisonville defense then stopped the Firebirds on three plays to scored two points and bring the margin to 30-23 with just seconds to go in the game.
Madisonville had time to try a long shot down the field, but the pass down the middle was intercepted on the final play of the game, giving Pearl-Cohn 3 points and securing a 33-23 win for the Firebirds.
