School and local officials in Hopkins County, along with a contingent of state officials that included Governor Andy Beshear, were among those gathered at Hopkins County Central High School for a ribbon-cutting ceremony to officially open the new auxiliary gyms at both Hopkins County Central and Madisonville-North Hopkins High School.
In addition to serving as athletic facilities for the two schools, the gymnasiums will also offer storm shelters to residents in the county.
As part of the new facilities at Hopkins County Central, the Heritage Hall includes a display case featuring the 1967 Earlington High School state basketball championship trophy, interactive video boards for Hopkins County Central and its Hall of Fame, and photo slideshows for Earlington High School, South Hopkins High School, West Hopkins High School, and the former community schools.
The additions at both Hopkins County Central and Madisonville-North Hopkins include a full-sized basketball court, spectator seating, storm shelter, locker rooms, restrooms, and a multi-purpose area.
The multi-purpose area at Madisonville North Hopkins includes classrooms, storage, and athletic training.
At Hopkins County Central, the area offers space for the cheer and dance teams with a specialized floor system.
