
New coach Emily Oliver got a good look at her Caldwell County Lady Tigers squad over the weekend at the Bluegrass State Games in Lexington.
After losing two games to open play on Friday, the Lady Tigers rallied to win four of their final six matches to finish the weekend with a 4-4 record.
Caldwell opened play in flight play on Sunday with a win over Murray and followed it with a 21-13, 21-11 win over Harrison County. Their run came to an end against Second Region foe Christian County in the flight semifinals 21-19, 21-15.
The Lady Tigers opened play on Friday at Frederick Douglass High School against Ballard and Harlan County.
Ballard, who was 29-8 last year, featured 6-foot-7 Ella Grivna, a University of South Carolina commit, and 6-foot-6 Ava Liening, who has given a verbal to Dayton.
Ballard won the match 21-10, 21-4.
Harlan County (26-7), 52nd District champions a year ago, defeated the Lady Tigers 21-6, 21-5.
Caldwell County was put into a pool at Frederick Douglass on Saturday against Johnson Central (27-7), South Laurel (11-21), and North Laurel (11-15), where they won two of three matches.
The Lady Tigers opened with a 16-21, 21-9, 15-9 win over Johnson Central, last year’s 15th Region runner-up.
Caldwell lost to South Laurel 21-14, 21-11, but defeated the defending 49th District champion North Laurel 21-18, 21-18.
Caldwell County was 19-10 last year and won the 7th District championship before losing to Heritage Christian Academy in the region semifinals. The Lady Tigers graduated five seniors off last year’s team and will open the 2025 season at home against Union County on August 19.
