It was a matchup of two teams expected to contend for the respective regional titles Monday night, and it played out that way as well. University Heights Academy got a huge second half from goalie Madison Williams as the Lady Blazers held on to a one-goal halftime lead to take a 2-1 win on the road at Greenwood in the season opener for both teams.

The Lady Gators got on the board first, just five minutes into the contest, taking an early 1-0 lead.

UHA pulled even just before a water break midway through the opening half when Kendall Hancock scored her first goal of the season to make it 1-1.

Late in the half, Hancock found Gracie Ausenbaugh going down the right side with a perfect pass. Ausenbaugh then sent the shot across the face of the goal, in front of the keeper, and found the left side of the net to give the Lady Blazers a 2-1 lead at the break.

From there, it was Williams’ time for the Lady Blazers as the UHA keeper threw a shutout in the second half as the Lady Blazers held on for the one-goal win over the defending 4th Region runner-up.

For the night, Williams came up big time for the Lady Blazers, finishing with 11 saves.

UHA (1-0) gets back to action a week from Tuesday when the Lady Blazers open 8th District play on the road at Fort Campbell.
