Tuesday’s highly anticipated girls’ soccer match between Caldwell County and Trigg County had an anticlimactic ending as constant lightning in the area resulted in its cancellation after 32 minutes of action.
Both teams entered play 1-0 after wins on Monday and featured potent offenses. However, a light rain shower greeted teams during warmups, and the first 30-minute lightning delay was called eight minutes into the match.
Coming out of the delay, Leiah Hite scored unassisted to put Trigg ahead 1-0. She added a second goal seven minutes later off a feed from Maggie Wolfe.
Caldwell County’s Kinley Rowland got the Lady Tigers on the board in the 22nd minute to cut the Trigg lead in half. However, that was the last stretch of consistent play. A second lightning delay occurred in the 29th minute of the match, lasting 42 minutes.
After just five minutes of play, a third and final lightning delay stopped the match for good. Team officials conferred during the delay, and the match was canceled. Trigg County Athletic Director Doug Gloyd said the match is considered a no-contest, and the stats will not count. It will be up to the teams whether they try and reschedule the match for another date down the road.
Both teams have road matches on Thursday. Caldwell County will visit Muhlenberg County, while Trigg County will play at Henderson County.
