Hancock Pulls Away After Break to Take Scrimmage at Hopkins Central

Hopkins County Central played Hancock County even for a half.

But the visiting Hornets put up three unanswered touchdowns in the second half to defeat the Storm 27-7 in Friday’s scrimmage at Storm Stadium in Mortons Gap.

It was the final preseason tilt for Hopkins Central, which played Calloway County to a 14-14 tie last week.

Hancock scored first on Friday, getting on the scoreboard on a 29-yard touchdown pass with 3:46 left in the first quarter.

The Storm countered in the second period when Sylas Gunn hooked up with Tyler Matheny in the back of the end zone. The play covered 17 yards and tied the contest at 7-7 with 7:04 left in the first half.

The Hornets broke the tie at the 8:11 mark of the third period on a 44-yard touchdown run.

Hancock added a 4-yard scoring run with 4:10 left in the quarter, then added a 1-yard touchdown run with 5:12 remaining in the game to open up a 27-7 advantage.

Hopkins Central will kick off the regular season next Friday by hosting Caldwell County. The Storm will also celebrate Homecoming that night.
