The Christian County Colonels football team had their last first game of the season on Saturday evening at the Stadium of Champions, but Northeast was able to get the better of them and exhibit their red-hot offense.
Christian County got it started with a 38-yard passing touchdown from Tom Johnson to Zyon Wharton. This gave the team a 7-0 lead, but unfortunately, this was their only lead of the game.
The game was tied at seven apiece for about a quarter, as the Colonels’ defense was able to hold Northeast and force a few punts. Jimmarion Byrd was also able to get the team’s first interception of the year.
The Colonels had a few opportunities to score in the first half, but a pair of interceptions, one of which was in the red zone, stopped their efforts. As a result, they went into the halftime break down 20-7.
After another interception that led to a pick six, Christian County was able to answer back with a 62-yard passing touchdown to Michael Tandy. And the team’s final score of the game came from a short rushing touchdown from Deasian Harris.
Northeast was able to keep the pressure up and continue scoring, and that led to them being able to grab the 48-20 win.
That does not mean that the Colonels did not have players that had solid games. Johnson sustained a serious-looking injury in the fourth quarter, but before that, he had 234 passing yards and two touchdowns. Tandy finished with 87 yards and a touchdown, while Wharton had 82 yards and a touchdown.
The Colonels will be hoping that Johnson can make a speedy recovery from his injury in the fourth quarter. But in the meantime, they will be looking to get their first win in their next game against the Mayfield Cardinals at home on Friday, August 29. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
