Caldwell County Takes 3rd at Smackdown Tournament

The Caldwell County Lady Tiger volleyball team placed third in the West Kentucky Smackdown tournament on Saturday at the Planters Bank-Jennie Stuart Health Sportsplex in Hopkinsville.

Caldwell’s girls went 4-1 in the 10-team event, with their only loss coming to eventual tournament champion Owensboro Catholic in the semifinals.

The Lady Tigers then defeated Crittenden County in the third-place match. It was Caldwell’s second win of the day against the Lady Rockets, who were ranked No. 1 in the 2nd Region in the volleyball coaches preseason poll.

Caldwell’s girls are now 5-2 this season.

The Lady Tigers went 3-0 in pool play on Saturday.

Caldwell defeated Garrard County 25-20, 13-25, 15-9 in its opener.

Chevy McGowan had four kills and six digs in the win while Alaiyaa Shearer added three kills and a block. Kylee White had two kills, nine assists and four digs. Mycah Riddle had eight digs.

Caldwell then beat Hopkinsville 25-18, 25-17.

Med Thomas had five kills in that win while Grace Watson recorded four kills. Shearer had two kills and two blocks. Troy Freeman added two kills. White had 11 assists, a kill, eight digs and seven aces while Riddle had nine digs and four aces.

The Lady Tigers finished pool play by defeating Crittenden County 25-23, 25-18.

Shearer had six kills and a block while Thomas also had six kills. White totaled 20 assists, four digs and three aces. McGowan had three kills while Watson and Sophie P’Pool each had two kills. Riddle had eight digs.

Caldwell won its pool and got a bye into the semifinals of the Gold Bracket.

However, the Lady Tigers suffered their only loss of the day with a 25-19, 25-18 setback to Owensboro Catholic.

Thomas had three kills in the loss. Shearer had two kills and a block while Freeman added two kills. White had eight assists and a kill. Riddle recorded 13 digs.

That set up a rematch with Crittenden in the third-place contest. The Lady Tigers dropped the first set before coming back to capture a 19-25, 26-24, 15-11 triumph.

Watson recorded four kills and a block while Thomas, McGowan and Maddie Cooper had four kills apiece. Shearer totaled three kills and a block. White had 21 assists while Riddle had 23 digs. Freeman had three kills. Tink Clark added two kills.

Caldwell’s girls will next host Hopkins County Central for a 7th District matchup on Tuesday.
