It took nearly two weeks to produce a final score, but the Trigg County Lady Wildcats were able to claim a 3-2 win over Caldwell County in a match suspended due to lightning.

Beginning on Aug. 12, the teams played 32 minutes between three lightning delays with Trigg County leading 2-1.

Leiah Hite scored unassisted to put Trigg ahead 1-0. She added a second goal seven minutes later off a feed from Maggie Wolfe.

Caldwell County’s Kinlee Rowland got the Lady Tigers on the board in the 22nd minute to cut the Trigg lead in half.

When play resumed on Monday at Josh Nichols Field, the weather was a complete 180 from the first night.

The teams played an anticlimactic eight minutes to finish out the first half as they tried to regain the feel and rhythm of a rivalry match.

Five minutes into the second half, Lydia Redd found Hite with a pass, and the Lady Wildcat senior knocked it home to complete her hat trick and put the Lady Wildcats up 3-1.

Caldwell County controlled the possession from that point forward. After just two first half shots, Caldwell sent 10 shots toward the goal over the next 30 minutes.

Nunie Bates used a strong left foot to score a goal and bring Caldwell to within 3-2 with 16 minutes left.

Caldwell continued to put pressure on the Trigg goal with Caroline Kozak making seven second half saves for the Lady Wildcats.

A key play in the match came with four minutes left when Lilly Richardson drove the length of the field along the sideline to get the ball out of the Caldwell zone for the first time in several minutes. Trigg retained possession for two minutes and allowed the defense to reset.

Caldwell’s best chance to tie the match came with a minute left, but Aliya Towns’ shot from the top of the box sailed high.

Trigg ended up with a 13-11 shot advantage, and Caldwell’s goalie, Eleanor Roach, had three second half saves.

The win for Trigg was their second in three matches over Caldwell County and avenged a 5-1 loss to the Lady Tigers last year.

Trigg County (4-1) will play Murray Tuesday in the Class 2A Sectional semifinals at Calloway County, while Caldwell County (3-2) will host Webster County on Tuesday.
