Lauren Mayes used a strong second mile to pull away and win the Madisonville Cross Country Classic on Saturday.
The Hopkinsville High senior covered the 3.1-mile course on the school’s campus in 21:20, taking the win by 24 seconds over St. Mary’s Gabby Ault.
It’s been a tough month for Mayes, who has been bothered by lingering injuries that are magnified as a multiple-sport athlete. She also plays for the Lady Tiger soccer team during the fall.
Mayes repeated as the Madisonville Classic champion, just missing her personal best time by 14 seconds. She also knocked two minutes off her winning time from last year.
Alexis Herrera Lovato produced a top-10 finish, with her time of 24:49 good for tenth place.
Luanna Acree came in 31st place with a time of 32:57.
