Despite only trailing 18-7 at the halftime break on Friday at the Stadium of Champions, the Christian County Colonels saw their Homecoming hopes slip away after a 36-point 3rd-quarter surge by visiting Daviess County in a 60-7 defeat.

The Colonels got off to a slow start and trailed 11-0 after Daviess’ Ridge Roberts found the end zone with an 18-yard run.  The Panthers then extended the advantage to 18-0 late in the second quarter on a halfback pass from Jace Hunt to Treyson McRath.

However, Christian County appeared to have clawed its way back into the game when Tom Johnson hit Zyon Wharton for an 18-yard scoring strike with 5 seconds left in the opening half.

But any momentum the Colonels may have had evaporated when Daviess’ Hunter Corbin took the kickoff back 77 yards to start the second half and give the Panthers a 26-7 lead.

After a Christian County fumble, Daviess was back in the end zone in short order on a 5-yard Roberts run with 9:51 left in the third.  Just 19 seconds later, Josh Coffey stepped in front of a Colonel screen pass and returned it 50 yards to stretch the lead to 40-7.

Roberts’ 25-yard TD run padded the margin, and after another Colonel fumble, Daviess’ Garrison Barker found Hunt with a 39-yard pass to cap the 3rd-quarter explosion.

Daviess County outgained the Colonels with 264 yards to 154, including 99 rushing yards and three scores for Roberts.  Christian County turned the ball over seven times, with five interceptions and two fumbles.  DeAsian Harris was a bright spot for the Colonels with 99 yards rushing on 23 attempts.

Christian County slipped to 0-4 and will be off next week before travelling to Caverna on September 26.

Daviess County evened its record to 2-2 and avenged a 12-10 loss to the Colonels in last season’s meeting.
