Caldwell County didn’t get many scoring chances against Marshall County. But the Tigers cashed in on an early opportunity, and played the visiting Marshals to a 1-1 draw for much of the first half.
But Marshall got to halftime with a 2-1 lead, then spent the second half pulling away. The Marshals went on to claim a 9-1 decision Thursday night at Butler Stadium in Princeton — ending the game on the eight-goal mercy rule in the 71st minute.
Marshall (7-7-1) scored the game’s first goal less than 2 minutes into the match. Maddox Schroader was credited with the goal to give the visitors the early lead.
However, Caldwell (3-8) countered in the 14th minute when Colin Turmero ran onto a pass from Kale Turmero, outraced a defender to the ball and beat the Marshall goalkeeper to tie things at 1-1.
It was the 18th goal of the season for the Caldwell sophomore.
That’s where the score stayed until the 31st minute, when John Shadowen finished at the far post to put the Marshals back in front 2-1.
Eventually though, Marshall wore down the Tigers. The Marshals kept constant pressure on the Caldwell net, and put up seven second-half goals to end the match early.
Schroader, Maddox Konrad and Davis Hunt each had two goals for Marshall.
Colton Snyder had a goal and two assists while Shadowen had a goal and one assist. Levi Hayes also had a goal.
Houston Johnson had two assists while A.J. Hale had one helper.
Neither Marshall goalkeeper that played in the contest had to make a save as Caldwell’s offensive opportunities were limited.
Meanwhile, Caldwell goalkeeper Grayson Harris finished the night with 20 saves.
Marshall now leads the all-time series 17-1. Caldwell’s only win came in 2009, with the majority of the meetings taking place before the turn of the century.
Caldwell will face another 1st Region school on Tuesday when it goes to Paducah Tilghman as part of a girls and boys doubleheader. The Tigers will face a familiar face in Paducah. Former Caldwell head coach Tanner Reed is now the head coach of the Blue Tornado.
