An expected Class 2A 1st District battle never materialized.

Instead, Caldwell County sprinted out to a big lead and never looked back, defeating Fort Campbell 49-12 Friday night at Tiger Stadium.

Caldwell put two touchdowns on the scoreboard in the first 4 minutes, built a 28-0 lead after one quarter and held a 42-0 advantage at halftime.

The Tigers are now 5-1 overall and 2-0 in the district heading into a matchup with district favorite Mayfield (5-1, 2-0) next week in Princeton.

On a night of highlights for the Tigers, Wilson may have had the best.

With Caldwell up 28-0 in the second quarter, Wilson battled a pair of defenders for a deep pass down the left side. Wilson reached out and tipped the ball to himself, made the reception, then outraced the defense to the end zone for a 75-yard touchdown pass from Daelyn Lander.

Wilson had earlier scored on runs of 50 and 5 yards in the first quarter.

Colson Mattocks added a pair of 1-yard touchdown carries in the opening stanza for the Tigers.

Caldwell’s defense got into the act when Derek Wilson returned an interception 33 yards for a score midway through the second period to push the margin to 42-0.

The Tigers’ only score of the second half came on a 78-yard kickoff return by Shane Fairrow on the opening play of the half.

Fort Campbell (3-3, 1-1) broke up the shutout late in the third quarter on a 12-yard TD pass from Tannar Walters to Levi Kruse.

The duo hooked up again in the fourth quarter, this time on a 28-yard scoring connection.

Caldwell had 254 yards of total offense in the first half, but mustered just 22 in the second half after going deep into its bench.

The Tigers finished with 141 yards rushing while Lander was 4-for-6 passing for 135 yards. All of the passing yardage came in the first half.

Fort Campbell was held to 92 total yards in the first half but finished the night with 212.

The Falcons had 120 yards on the ground and 92 in the air.
