‘The Mighty Quinn’ was a 1989 movie featuring Denzel Washington in one of his first Hollywood movie roles.
Crittenden County showed off its own version of the ‘Mighty Quinn’ in Friday’s 33-24 district win at Trigg County.
Rockets quarterback Quinn Summers ran for 158 yards and threw for 195 more, accounting for four touchdowns in the victory.
Summers, who entered the game with 182 career rushing yards, gave the Perdue Field crowd a preview of coming attractions with a 62-yard run to the Trigg 7-yard line on the game’s first play. He would score two plays later on a 3-yard plunge. The Rockets opted for a two-point conversion attempt and failed.
Trigg County was forced to utilize a Wildcat formation on offense due to quarterback Caden Scott’s injury suffered in last week’s loss to Caldwell County.
Trigg moved the football on its first drive, capped by a 6-yard run by Davaree Gude with 7:18 left in the opening quarter. Gude took most of the snaps and ran five of Trigg’s seven plays on the drive.
The Trigg defense appeared to have a stop on Crittenden’s next drive, but a Wildcat lined up offside on 4th and 3 to keep the drive alive. The Rockets capitalized five plays later when Summers found Davis Perryman on a 2-yard pass. Mason Brown’s PAT put the Rockets ahead 13-6.
A short Trigg punt set Crittenden County up with a short field, but Summers was picked off at the 3-yard line by Brody Renfroe, who returned it 97 yards for an apparent touchdown. However, Trigg was called for an illegal block at midfield that nullified the score – the fourth touchdown taken off the board by a penalty this year.
Trigg County appeared headed for the equalizing score with a 14-play drive that took 9:28 off the clock. The Wildcats had first and goal at the 8-yard line, but a procedure penalty and a hold stalled the drive.
Penalties were a recurring theme for the Wildcats, who were flagged 13 times for 104 yards.
With just 2:16 left before halftime, Crittenden went 89 yards in just 1:32 and scored on a 21-yard screen from Summers to Caden Howard that put the Rockets ahead 20-6.
Renfroe took the ensuing kickoff 59 yards to the Crittenden 11-yard line, and Gude punched it in from 8 yards out with 10 seconds left.
The PAT was blocked for a second straight attempt and left the Wildcats trailing 20-12 at halftime.
The teams traded third-quarter touchdowns – Crittenden scored on a 6-yard run by Trae Taylor and Trigg on a 28-yard run by Gude – which kept Crittenden ahead 26-18.
Taylor provided a change of pace for the Rockets’ offense with 76 second-half rushing yards on 10 carries. The diminutive Taylor proved to be difficult for the Wildcat defense to tackle, culminating with a clinching touchdown with 5:50 left when he took a middle screen pass from Summers and escaped five Trigg efforts to tackle on his way to the end zone.
Taylor finished with four catches for 60 yards.
Summers was 16 of 33 passing for 195 yards as the Rockets rolled up a season high 429 yards.
Trigg County had 258 rushing yards on 39 carries, but was one-dimensional on offense with one pass competition for two yards.
Gude finished with 192 yards on 28 carries and moved past Brandon Bridges into sixth place on Trigg’s all-time rushing list with 3,474 yards.
The win was just Crittenden County’s 13th in 42 career meetings with Trigg, but the Rockets have won eight of the last 11 meetings, including the last four.
Crittenden County evened its record at 3-3 overall and 1-1 in the district. They will host Todd County Central on Thursday.
Trigg County has lost five straight after a season-opening victory over winless Ohio County. They are 0-2 in the district and will play at Fort Campbell on Friday.
