Braves Ground Attack Powers Past Hopkins County Central

If they had opened the game like they finished it, things might have turned out a little bit different for the Hopkins County Central Storm Friday night. Union County built a big lead and went on to take a 42-22 win over the Storm in the district opener for both teams in Mortons Gap.

Union County led 42-6 going into the fourth quarter and had put the running clock into play. The Storm got some big plays over the final 12 minutes but it was a little too late as the Braves picked up their first district win.

After stopping Hopkins County Central on the first possession of the game, Union County went on a long drive for the first score of the night. The drive was capped off on a 7 yard touchdown run from Willem McPeake with 5:40 to go in the first quarter, putting the Braves up 7-0.

Another defensive stop and the Braves were right back to work. Another long drive ended with a 3 yard touchdown run from Cameron Webb with 1:09 to go in the first and Union County was up 14-0.

The Storm faithful got a spark of hope on the final play of the first quarter when Sylas Gunn rambled 30 yards about left end to cut the Union County lead to 14-6.

The third possession of the night for Braves saw their third touchdown of the night. Willem McPeake found the end zone again, this time from 3 yards out to extend the Union County lead to 21-6 with 8:42 to go in the second quarter. The Braves kept their streak alive on the fourth possession of the game when Colby Heppler caught a 3 yard touchdown pass to make it 28-6 with 3:17 to go in the half.

The Braves continued rolling along as the second half got started. After taking the kickoff, Union County went down the field, finding the end zone on a 19 yard run from Willem McPeak, and it was 35-6 with 10:09 to go in the third.

Later in the quarter, the Braves got the game to the running clock when Gavyn Black caught a touchdown pass to make it 42-6.

The Storm found some energy in the fourth quarter and put up 16 points in the quarter. A long touchdown run from Sylas Gunn, a safety, and a touchdown reception for Isac Earl cut the final margin to 42-22.

For the game, Union County outgained the Storm 339 yards to 208.

The Braves had 304 of that total on the ground and 35 through the air. Hopkins Central finished with 205 yards, 124 rushing and 81 through the air.

Hopkins County Central goes to 1-5 overall and 0-1 in district play. The Storm have a bye week next week and then will travel to Webster County October 17th.

  1. Manning is out coached every Single game. He has talent on that field but you cant keep playing the same stuff and expecting different results. That is definition of insanity not including Gunns 3 interceptions he threw. This coach needs to let the others take over he's took a decent team.and.ran them in the ground. Shsme on him!!
