The Caldwell County Tiger football team had made a lot of progress over the previous three weeks. But the Tigers ran into a roadblock Friday night.

Perennial Class 2A power Mayfield put the clamps on a Caldwell offense that had been averaging almost 40 points a game, and dealt the Tigers a 52-0 setback in 1st District action at Tiger Stadium.

Mayfield quarterback Gray Robbins passed for 198 yards and five first-half touchdowns as the Cardinals ran out to a 21-0 lead after one quarter and a 38-0 advantage at halftime.

Mayfield (6-1 overall, 3-0 district) finished the night with 311 yards — 247 in the air.

The Cardinals took advantage of short fields much of the night, especially in the opening quarter as their defense kept Caldwell backed up.

The Tigers (5-2, 2-1) had just 20 total yards in the first half, including minus-four on the ground on 16 carries.

Caldwell finished the night with 117 total yards — 44 on the ground.

Robbins threw scoring passes to Mak Hoover, Gavan Fisher and Will Morris in the opening quarter.

Morris and Hoover also had TD receptions in the second period — Hoover’s coming on a 72-yard bomb down the middle.

Owen Byrd also kicked 35-yard field goal in the second period and made all seven of his PATs in the contest.

Mayfield added a 21-yard touchdown run by Ja’Aubrey Sherrill in the third quarter.

Malik Kirby hit Ashton Flint with a 38-yard scoring toss in the fourth quarter as Mayfield beat Caldwell for the 13th straight time.

Hoover caught the two passes for 86 yards for Mayfield while Morris had six grabs for 63 yards.

Meanwhile, Caldwell just couldn’t get much going on offense, although the Tigers did have the ball inside the Mayfield 10-yard line late before deciding to allow the clock to run out.

Caldwell will get an extra week to bounce back. The Tigers have a bye next week before hosting Todd County Central in district action on Thursday, Oct. 16.

Mayfield is also off next Friday before traveling to Trigg County for a district date on Friday, Oct. 17.
