The 7th District championship streak is now 14 for Madisonville-North Hopkins, which blanked Hopkins County Central 2-0 Thursday night in Princeton.

Kyle Yates scored both goals for the Maroons, who dictated play for most of the night and outshot the Storm 33-2.

Madisonville (6-10-1) got its first goal in the 5th minute when Yates scored with help from Dom Blanford.

But Hopkins Central (10-7) centered its efforts on the defensive end of the field and kept it a one-goal match for a long time as the Storm tried to give itself a chance against the favored Maroons.

The game stayed 1-0 until a penalty kick in the 58th minute. Yates converted the PK to make it a 2-0 game.

Hopkins Central goalkeeper William Clevenger helped keep his team in the match with 14 saves. But the Maroons kept the pressure on the Storm net most of the night.

Meanwhile, Madisonville keeper Adam Devine rarely touched the ball at the other end. He did not record a save while picking up the shutout.

The last time the Maroons failed to win the district championship was before the current alignment was set. In 2011, Madisonville fell to Henderson County in the championship of what was the 5th District at the time. The current alignment came into play the following year.

Both Madisonville and Hopkins Central will play in the 2nd Region tournament next week at Henderson County.
