Madisonville’s Golden Goal Spoils Webster Comeback in Regional

In the blink of an eye, Kyle Yates lifted Madisonville-North Hopkins into the 2nd Region semifinals — and sent Webster County to a gut-wrenching setback.

Yates blistered home a long shot following a free kick with 2:52 left in overtime, giving the Maroons a 3-2 victory over a game Trojan squad Monday night in Henderson.

Madisonville (7-10-1) will take on University Heights Academy (16-6) in Wednesday’s semifinals. The Blazers edged Trigg County 2-1 in Monday’s other opening-round matchup.

Yates’ golden goal turned away a Webster squad that had rallied late to tie the contest and seemingly had momentum heading into overtime.

The Trojans (10-8) tied the match with just 2:10 left in regulation. A free kick by Antono Deigo was headed out of the box by Madisonville. However, the ball came out to Pasacual Alonzo near the 18, and he one-timed a shot into the far corner of the net from the right side.

Down 2-0 at halftime, Webster cut the gap to a single goal with 32:30 left in the game when James Higdon scored on a tough angle from the goal line, fitting the shot just inside the near post from the left side.

Madisonville scored the game’s first goal at the 18:28 mark of the first half when Noah Mays converted on a penalty kick.

The Maroons made it 2-0 with 13:59 left in the half. Madisonville countered quickly following a missed free kick by Webster, going the length of the field. Trey Starks finished off a pass from Nash Tapp on the left side of the goal.

Madisonville seemingly had control of the contest at that point — but Webster refused to go quietly in the second half.

The Maroons finished the night with a 20-12 advantage in shots.

Madisonville goalkeeper Adam Devine recorded six saves while Harrison Warren had 12 stops in the Webster net.
