In a matchup featuring the absence of key personnel, Mayfield defeated Trigg County 58-6 on Friday at Perdue Field for their 15th straight district victory.

The Cardinals were playing without leading rusher Josiah England (291 yards, 3 TDs), while Trigg County was playing without quarterbacks Caden Scott (shoulder) and Timmy Williams (knee), and receivers Peyton Williams (hand) and Brody Renfroe (ankle).

As a result, Trigg took to the field with 25 players in uniform and fell behind 14-0 in the first quarter on a 4-yard run by Cedric Dowell and a 70-yard run by Ja’Aubrey Sherrill.

Mayfield utilized its passing game and strength in the screen pass to complete 7 of 7 throws for 167 yards in the first 24 minutes. Those passes came into play in the second quarter as screen passes to Ashton Flint (43 yards) and Malik Kirby (11 yards) found the end zone.

Trigg County got on the board in the second quarter with 2:58 left when Deon Edison threw a jump pass to Connor Bellows, who broke a tackle and went down the sideline for a 59-yard touchdown.

Edison got one more attempt in the half, but it was picked off by Diego Torres and returned 31 yards for a 35-6 Mayfield lead at the half.

The Cardinals triggered the running clock with seven minutes left in the third quarter when Kirby went 52 yards for the score.

Owen Byrd’s fourth field goal of the year came from 28 yards and ended the third quarter for a 45-6 Mayfield lead.

A Trigg fumble deep in its own territory was recovered in the end zone by Ethan Thompson with 9:00 left.

The Wildcats’ final drive ended with another fumble at its own 11-yard line with 2:00 left. Backup quarterback Sawyer Stinson threw a screen pass to Brayden Milliken, who scored on the game’s final play.

With England not playing, Mayfield only ran the ball eight times for 52 yards. Robbins finished 10 of 12 passing for 238 yards. Kirby had three catches for 79 yards, and Will Morris had three for 55 yards.

Davaree Gude, Trigg County’s leading rusher and scorer, left with an injury in the first half. He ran for 11 yards on seven carries.

Edison took over at quarterback and was 2 of 3 for 68 yards – his first varsity attempts and completions. He also ran the football 21 times for -27 yards. Trigg managed -10 rushing yards on 37 carries and turned the ball over three times.

One plus for the Wildcats was one penalty for 10 yards. Trigg came into the game averaging 10 penalties a game for 83 yards.

Mayfield (7-1, 4-0) clinched the top seed in the district ahead of next week’s game with Fort Campbell.

Trigg County (1-6, 0-3) will play at Todd County Central next Friday and at Fort Campbell on Oct. 30. The Wildcat need to win both to reach the playoffs as the four seed.
