Weeks before the start of the soccer season, there was a concern that Heritage Christian Academy would not be able to field a team due to low numbers. That especially struck Kallan Davis hard. The Warrior senior was banking on a senior season on the field to assist with his chances of landing a chance to play soccer in college.
Davis and others beat the bushes and recruited the hallways to get enough people to fill a starting lineup, and the Warriors were able to compete.
Fast forward two months, and Davis found himself being recruited by another HCA team. The cross country team needed five runners to field a complete team at Saturday’s region meet, and they turned to Kallan, arguably the school’s best male athlete.
Running in his first race, he finished a respectable 34th in a time of 21:29 over the 3.1-mile course, averaging a sub-seven-minute mile. His finish, as well as the other four runners, helped the Warriors qualify for the KHSAA State Meet for the first time in school history.
The big difference, Kallan said in this YSE interview, is that there are no hills on a soccer field.
