The high school basketball regular season is quickly approaching, and the Madisonville-North Hopkins Maroons played a scrimmage against Murray High on Tuesday evening to prepare. The score reset after every period, and both teams were able to win two quarters.

The first quarter went to the Tigers with a score of 20-14, as the Maroons shot themselves in the foot with a number of turnovers. Fortunately, they were able to bounce back fairly well in the next quarter.

Madisonville was able to take the second 16-11, and that was helped by the fact that Murray missed five free throws. The Maroons were also able to put in a few threes to help them win their first quarter of the game.

But the Tigers came back with a vengeance after the halftime break, and they did so with their defense. They implemented a full court press that caused the Maroons to turn the ball over quite a few times. This was the driving force in Murray being able to take the third quarter 25-6, with Madisonville’s six points being off of just two threes.

The fourth and final quarter was Madisonville’s chance to get their revenge for what had happened in the third, and that is exactly what they were able to do. Lake Sumner scored the first 10 points of the quarter for the Maroons. Then a three-pointer and an and-one from him gave Madisonville a 21-20 lead.

After they scored again to make it 23-20, the Tigers were able to make a three-pointer with just a few seconds left on the clock. But Sumner was then able to score a layup as time expired to give his team the win and tie the scrimmage at two quarters apiece.

Sumner put up 24 points over the course of the game, and Orion Underwood also contributed 10 points. Murray outscored Madisonville 79-61, but the majority of that was due to the third quarter.

The Maroons will kick off their regular season on Monday, December 1, on the road against Union County. The game will begin at 7:30 p.m.
