
The Hopkinsville girls’ swim team captured a third-place finish at Saturday’s Rick Cohn Invitational in the Hoptown facility that bears his name.
The Lady Tigers had six individual finishes in the top five and scored 42 points. A pair of Region 2 schools – Bowling Green (87) and Muhlenberg County (63) – took the top two team positions.
Grace Cansler, the two-time defending region champion in the 100-yard breaststroke, is off to a good start as she swims for a third straight title. The Hoptown senior finished in second place in the event to Bowling Green’s Tinsley Jamison by .05 seconds. Jamison, who finished third in Region 2 last year, had a winning time of 1:18.65.
Cansler also finished in fifth place in the 50-yard freestyle in 29.46 seconds.
Lily Johnston finished in third place in the 100-yard fly in 1:16.25 and was fourth place in the 50-yard freestyle in 27.96, just 1.39 seconds behind the winner.
Saralynn Major finished in fourth place in the 100-yard freestyle in 1:06.63 and came in sixth place in the 50-yard freestyle in 29.72 seconds.
Kaley Bangart finished in fifth place in the 100-yard freestyle in 1:08.79 and was seventh place in the 200-yard freestyle in 2:30.76.
Brilyn Merrick finished eighth in the 100-yard backstroke and 15th in the 200-yard freestyle in 2:53.48.
Evelyn Bangart came in ninth place in the 100-yard freestyle and 14th place in the 50-yard freestyle in 33.16 seconds.
Sarah Kate Gilliam was tenth in the 200-yard freestyle in 2:45.31.
Madelin Macario was 13th in the 100-yard freestyle in 1:19.26 and 17th in the 100-yard backstroke in 1:45.29.
Brooke Ebbinger was 14th in the 100-yard backstroke in 1:38.91 and 22nd in the 50-yard freestyle in 36.23 seconds.
Kaydon Coats was 16th in the 200-yard freestyle in 2:53.75 and 16th in the 50-yard freestyle in 33.28 seconds.
The 200-yard medley relay team finished in third place in 2:14.78, which was about 10 seconds behind the race winner, Muhlenberg County. The 200-yard free relay team also finished third in 2:00.57, just over six seconds behind the winner.
Hopkinsville had a second team compete in the 200-yard freestyle relay, finishing sixth in 2:10.34.
The 400-yard free relay team came in fifth place in 4:59.37.
