After a tough first season on the job in 2024-2025, Todd County Central head boys basketball coach Walter McCombs is looking for his Rebels to make some significant positive strides in the new basketball season that gets underway Tuesday night.
The Rebels won just twice last season, getting wins over Fort Campbell and Russellville. The season ended with a loss to Logan County in the semifinals of the 13th District tournament.
Gone from last year’s team are three of the Rebels’ top six scorers. Antavion Shemwell (7.6 ppg), Devin Schutt (5.7 ppg), and Brett Harris (4.3 ppg), were among the six seniors to see action for Todd County Central last season.
Returning are the team’s top two scorers from a year ago. John Ross Cardwell averaged 9.7 points and 3.8 rebounds per contest. Connor Holder was right behind him at 9.2 points and 2.5 rebounds a game. McCombs will need both players to take those numbers up a step this season.
Jayden Glass is back for his junior season after averaging 5.3 points and 1.4 rebounds per contest in 2024-2025. He figures to have the chance to take a big step forward for the Rebels this season. Senior Hunter Johnson appeared in 26 games last year and will have a chance to step up into an increased role this year.
Freshman Spencer Pool is back after seeing action in just 14 games last season. Pool is athletic and can make a big difference for the Rebels when he is on the court.
After not playing last season, junior Noah Rager, a standout golfer at Todd County Central, is back on the roster for the Rebels this season.
In addition to Spencer Pool, three other freshmen will be looking for a chance to be contributors for Todd County Central. Elijah Comperry, Izayah Cox, and DaVaughn Lister join the Rebel roster.
Improved shooting will be key for Todd County Central this season. The Rebels shot just 36.3 percent from the field last year and that is a number that makes it hard to win many ballgames. They did hit a respectable 30.7 percent from behind the 3-point line. Glass and Holder both hit north of 32 percent for the year on threes.
Another area the Rebels will be looking to improve is attacking the glass. No Todd County Central player averaged more than 4 rebounds a game in 2024-2025.
As for the schedule, there are home games that include Hancock County, Montgomery Central, Christian County, and Hopkinsville. On the road, the Rebels will see Bowling Green, Christian County, Hopkinsville, and Foundation Christian, as well as a game at Clinton County in the opening round of the 4th Region All A Classic.
Plus, there is the usual run through the 13th District against Logan County, Russellville, and Franklin-Simpson.
The Rebels will officially open the season Tuesday on the road at Clarksville Northwest.
