The Christian County Colonels basketball team is suiting up for one more season, but head coach Dior Curtis is not shying away from the responsibility of being the last group to dawn the Colonels’ jersey.
“Being part of the last season of Christian County basketball means everything to us. For me as a coach, it’s an honor and a responsibility. We know we’re carrying the final chapter of a program with decades of history, tradition, and pride. There’s a sense of urgency, but there’s also a sense of gratitude for everyone who came before us.”
But not only does the responsibility fall on his shoulders, but his players are holding themselves to a higher standard as well.
“For the players, it’s bigger than just basketball. They understand they’re representing every former Colonel who wore this jersey. It’s motivated them to practice harder, play with more pride, and really appreciate each moment. They want to leave a legacy that the community can be proud of.”
The Colonels finished last season with an 8-23 record overall, but Curtis is not letting that record define the season that he wants to have as the final year of County basketball.
“Our mindset is to get better everyday. We know the season is long so we have to able to deal with adversity. We know it’s not about how you start but how you finish. We want to be playing our best basketball at the end of the year.”
The team lost their leading scorer this past season to graduation, that being NaDarien Rowe. Their second leading scorer was big man Rahsean Stevenson, who is now a junior and is coming off of a 10.3 points per game season. And Curtis thinks that he is one of the players to watch this year.
“Rahsean Stevenson is our returning leading scorer. He is a great offensive rebounder and a solid presence in the low post. Zion Acree will be our point guard and floor general. He will set the tone with his leadership and defense, and we will also look to him to score more this season. Darren Bigbee will provide outside shooting and will be called upon to defend multiple positions. Zyon Wharton will use his athletic ability to rebound and guard multiple positions.”
“Frank Pollard, Tom Johnson, James Farley and Jay Henderson will also all be key role players for the success of our team.”
Dior did not have any particular games on the schedule circled, but he has a clear goal of mind of the games that he knows are important to his team’s success.
“We want to play well against all regional opponents especially Lyon and Henderson who will be two of the top teams in our region, and we to see how we fair against Bowling Green, Warren Central, McCracken who will be top teams in their respective regions.”
“We want to continue building a standard our players can carry with them long after the last buzzer sounds. This group has embraced the work, believes in each other, and is ready to write its own chapter in the program’s history.”
Christian County will kick off their final season on Tuesday against Apollo on the road.
