The Todd County Central girls’ basketball team opened the season on the road at Northwest on Tuesday, but will have to wait at least three more days for its first win of the campaign after a 62-42 defeat.

The Lady Rebels were held to single-digit scoring in the first and third quarters, with Ivy Downs dropping 17 points to lead Northwest to the victory.

Trailing by five points after the opening quarter, Kathryn Ballard and Daymea Garrett combined for 11 points in the second frame for the Lady Rebels. However, Downs and Shayla Vaughn teamed up to match that output and send the Vikings to a 26-21 halftime advantage.

Northwest put the game away with a 26-point third quarter behind two three-pointers and eight points from Downs.  Lanayja Lyons added six for the Vikings, and Leighani Santiago added four.

Ballard’s 14 points paced the Lady Rebels, followed by Chloe Collins with 11.

Downs led all scorers, joined in double figures for the Vikings by Vaughn with 13, and Lyons and Santiago with 10 each.

Todd Central will look to bounce back on Friday with a trip to Muhlenberg County.
