The Christian County Lady Colonels basketball team had their last ever home and season opener on Friday evening against the Kenwood Lady Knights, and they were able to do what they set out to do and get the win 68-47.
There was a bit of back and forth to start the first quarter, but Kenwood was able to take an 11-6 lead at a timeout with just over three minutes left. That score stayed the same until another time out with two minutes left.
Both teams were then able to score a few more buckets, but the deficit stayed the same with Kenwood ending the quarter up 15-10.
The second quarter started a bit slower, but Christian County’s Anaysia Bagwell was able to grab a few steals and capitalize to give the Lady Colonels the 19-18 lead with 5:21 left. After that it was very back and forth, and turnovers kept Christian County from gaining any momentum.
A few more turnovers, some empty possessions, and a layup from the Lady Knights at the buzzer then put the Lady Colonels down at halftime 29-27.
After being down the majority of the third quarter, Christian County forced a few turnovers and converted off of them to take a 43-38 lead. That lead then kept getting bigger, and their run was capped off by a big steal into an and-one from Genesis McGee.
The third quarter then ended with the Lady Colonels having a 48-40 lead.
That lead just kept on getting bigger in the fourth quarter, as County was able to keep getting steals and play solid defense, as well as get out and run and finish inside. All of this culminated in them eventually getting the victory 68-47.
Bagwell led the way for the Lady Colonels in scoring with 23 points, and Carliah Hobson was also able to pitch in 13 of her own.
They will be looking to start a win streak to begin their final season in their next game on Monday, December 8, against the Lady Maroons of Madisonville-North Hopkins. The game is scheduled to tip off at 6 p.m. at Christian County High School.
