The Madisonville-North Hopkins Maroons basketball team opened their season on the road against fellow Region 2 team Union County. After being up after the first quarter of play, the Maroons found themselves down the rest of the game, eventually losing 88-48.
The first period went well for Madisonville, as they were able to hit three threes, two of them coming from Lake Sumner, and of them from Orion Underwood. They led 17-13 after the first, but that was really the only time they were able to sit back and have a lead.
After that it was all Union, as they outscored the Maroons 27-9 in the second quarter. Interesting enough, the vast majority of Union’s buckets came from the paint, with them not making a three in three of the four quarters.
The Braves went up 40-26 at halftime, and they only continued to build that lead after they got a bit of a break.
They scored 29 in the third quarter compared to Madisonville’s 16, and this was the only quarter Union made a three, as they made three. Jeremiah Lewis and Jeremyah Sharp scored 11 of the 16 points in the quarter for the Maroons, but it was not enough to keep up with Union’s offense.
And the fourth was more of the same, seeing the Braves outscore Madisonville 19-6. This allowed them to close out the game and take home the victory 88-48.
The Maroons had two players score in double-digits, those being Sharp with 11 and Lewis with 10. Underwood also contributed nine point of his own.
Madisonville will be looking to redeem themselves on Saturday, December 6, on the road against North Laurel. The game is scheduled to tip off at 3 p.m. as part of the Legacy Nissan Classic.
