The Dawson Springs Lady Panthers opened their basketball season on the road against the Caverna Lady Colonels. Despite forcing over 20 turnovers over the course of the game, Dawson couldn’t capitalize like they would have hoped, and ended up losing by a narrow margin of 52-44.

The Lady Panthers got outscored 13-9 in the first quarter, but were able to get those four points back and tie the game up 19 heading into the halftime break. The driving force in the second quarter for Dawson was eighth grader Alieah Cook, as she scored half of the team’s 10 points in the period.

But the Lady Colonels came out of the break with a vengeance, and they were able to outscore the Lady Panthers 19-10 to take back the lead in commanding fashion.

And although Dawson was able to outscore Caverna in the fourth quarter, it was too little too late, and the Lady Colonels were able to get their first victory of the season with a score of 52-44.

Sophomore Baylee Swatzell led the way in scoring for the Lady Panthers with 11, and junior Briley Sawyer was also able to get into double-digits with 10 points of her own. Despite getting so close to the win, the Lady Panthers’ 2-20 shooting from three could be listed as the main reason for the heartbreaking loss in their first game of the season.

Dawson Springs will continue searching for their first win of the season in their next game on Tuesday, December 9, against the Hopkins County Central Lady Storm. The game is scheduled to tip off at 6 p.m. at Dawson Springs High School.
